Mouth of the Unalakleet River at Unalakleet |
The Unalakleet River is a 165 km long tributary of the Bering Sea in western Alaska .
It rises west of Kaltag in the Kaltag Mountains , a mountain range of the Nulato Hills , and flows southwest to the confluence with Norton Sound at Unalakleet . The valley of the river, the Kaltag Portage , is a passage through the coastal mountains, which was also used in 1925 for the dog sled relay to Nome caused by a diphtheria epidemic .
The North River joins the river 6 km east of Unalakleet from the north.
The name "Unalakleet" has its origin in the name of the native inhabitants for the river, which was recorded as "R (eka) Unalaklik" in 1842-44 and "Unalaklit" was written on a Russian map in 1852.
The first 130 km of the Unalakleet River to the confluence of the Chiroskey River were designated by the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act in 1980 as a National Wild and Scenic River under the administration of the Bureau of Land Management .
Fish fauna
The Unalakleet River is the habitat of several migratory fish species . These include dolly varden trout , king salmon , silver salmon , ketal salmon and pink salmon . There are also freshwater fish such as Arctic grayling and members of the Coregonus genus ("whitefish").
