Life

Rudolf Brockhaus was the fifth child of Carl Brockhaus , the founding father of the German Brotherhood Movement , and his wife Emilie geb. Lions.

After graduating from high school in Elberfeld , Rudolf Brockhaus completed a technical apprenticeship in Mülheim an der Ruhr and Elberfeld before joining the “Queen Olga” grenadier regiment in Stuttgart as a one-year volunteer . During this time he took on his first preaching tasks in the Stuttgart (“closed”) Brethren Congregation. Encouraged by this, he gave up his original plan of attending a higher building school after his military service and joined his father's publishing house, where he soon took over the editing of the evangelistic magazine seed grains and was involved in the ongoing revision of the Elberfeld Bible . In addition, he provided increasingly preaching and pastoral services in the brothers' congregations, e. Sometimes still together with older "brothers" (he once accompanied John Nelson Darby on a trip to Switzerland ).

In 1881 he married Therese Scheidt (1858–1951) from Mülheim, the daughter of his former trainer. The marriage had twelve children.

Around 1890, Rudolf Brockhaus took over the publication of the Ambassador of Salvation in Christ , the leading educational magazine for the German "closed brothers" from his father . In 1894 he had his father's publishing house registered in court for the first time under the name R. Brockhaus Verlag .

In the nearly four decades that followed, up to his death, Rudolf Brockhaus established himself as a leading figure among the “closed brothers” in Germany. Through his numerous articles in the Ambassador , which often appeared as separate prints, as well as through his written disputes with Christians who think differently (e.g. with the Free Evangelical Congregations 1912/13 or with the "Open Brothers" 1920-27) he shaped and shaped theology Sustainable self-image of the "closed brothers". His clear and systematic style makes his writings standard works for many “closed brothers” to this day. He also emerged as a song writer and song translator; The hymn books, Spiritual Hymns and Hymns of Faith , used by most of the Brethren, contain eleven texts by him.

After Rudolf Brockhaus' death, his eldest son Wilhelm (1882–1964) took over the management of the publishing house and the editing of the ambassador , although without exercising a comparable teaching authority.
