Rudolf Emanuel Passavant (born October 21, 1641 in Basel ; † December 7, 1718 in Frankfurt am Main ) was the first passer-by in the Free Imperial City of Frankfurt, where the family later came to be influential and rich.

Life

He was born in Basel, but had already been living in Hanau for 15 years when he was allowed to settle in Frankfurt am Main in 1682, where he successfully expanded his English manufactured goods business, which he had already established in Hanau. In 1686 he took the citizenship oath and bought a house in the Alte Mainzer Gasse at the Fahrtor . In 1703 he also bought the house at Zum Strahlberg am Römerberg . He was married three times and had 45 grandchildren. His first wife was Jeanne de Bassompierre from Frankfurt, to whom he a. a. wrote an intimate love letter still preserved.

Passavant was a member of the Reformed Congregation in Bockenheim . Since religious services by the Reformed community were not allowed in the Lutheran Frankfurt, Rudolf Emmanuel bought a plot of land with a house in Bockenheim. His grave is in the Peterskirchhof .
