Rudolf Herold

Rudolf Herold (born August 3, 1893 in Rotschau near Reichenbach in Vogtland , † April 1, 1982 in Erlbach (Vogtland) ) was a German composer .

Life

Called from school to the front, he was only able to work as a teacher in 1919, first in Tirpersdorf and from 1920 in Erlbach in the Vogtland . As a cantor, he founded a mixed choir with which he performed his first Christmas cantata in 1920 . He was married and had a son who died on the Eastern Front in 1941. After the end of the Second World War , when he was camp commandant in Wälzlager Eichsstedt, he became a religion teacher in Erlbach and set works by Johannes R. Becher , Bert Brecht , Niels Werner , Rose Nyland and others published by the Peters and Hofmeister publishers to music.

Rudolf experienced his great successes before the Second World War. Although ideologically neutral, he was dismissed from school after the war as part of the denazification process . As a former Wehrmacht officer he received little support in the GDR and lived in seclusion. He was a member of the GDR's Association of Composers and Musicologists . Performances of his works failed due to missing sheet music.

His opus comprises 165 titles. Including arrangements for choirs, string quartets, song cycles, cantatas, settings of poems and arrangements of songs. His work "On the Volga", "Symphonic Poem for the 50th Anniversary of the Great October Socialist Revolution " was premiered in 1975 by the Halle Philharmonic . Another work experienced its world premiere on the radio with a soloist choir, Berlin symphony orchestra and radio choir. "War Declaration" ("See your human brothers between death and life") for mixed choir and orchestra was performed and broadcast under conductor Thomas Sanderling.
