From 1926 to 1930 he studied natural sciences (geology-paleontology, mineralogy-petrography, geography and chemistry) at the University of Leipzig . In 1932 he did his doctorate in Leipzig under Franz Kossmat on the subject: The cliff area of Reuth-Gefell in the northwestern Vogtland . At Kossmat he worked as an assistant until 1935, after which he entered higher education in Leipzig. From 1948 he was entrusted by the "Geological State Institute in the Soviet Occupation Zone" with applied geological work (exploration of lignite and stone-and-earth deposits and hydrogeological reports), which was published in 1951 in the "State Geological Commission, Freiberg / Saxony branch, Arbeitsstelle Leipzig ”was renamed. As a result of his commitment, he was appointed to succeed the Saxon senior geologist Kurt Pietsch as chief geologist of the Freiberg / Saxony Geological Service in 1958 , which he headed until 1960. As early as 1951, Rudolf Hohl received a teaching position for applied geology at the Geological-Paleontological Institute of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) , which he held until 1959. In addition, the Freiberg Bergakademie gave him a teaching position in hydrogeology from 1959-1962. Due to his outstanding achievements, he was appointed professor on October 7, 1959. He worked for three years as vice dean or dean (1963–1966) of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences and as co-director of the Geological-Paleontological Institute (1962–1967). As part of the III. University reform he succeeded in firmly anchoring geology in the geography section founded in 1969 and until his retirement in 1971 he was head of the geology science department at MLU.
