Rudolf Maresch (Author)

Rudolf Maresch (* 1954 ) is a German publicist , journalist , critic and editor . Maresch studied philosophy, sociology and education at the University of Regensburg . He is the author and editor of numerous books that deal primarily with the media, the public and culture. He also works for various media such as the online magazine Telepolis .

Positions

In his "Political-Ethical Comments on a Controversy over Putin's Russia", Bernhard Sutor summarized a controversy between Andreas Umland and his critics: Umland and Leonid Luks took the position that "the Putin period represented a missed opportunity for Russia because it was in it the positive elements of democracy and pluralism from the Yeltsin era had largely been eliminated ". Kai Ehlers , Wladislaw Below and Alexander Rahr contradicted thisespecially Rudolf Maresch with a sharpness that Sutor perceived as radical. The critics of Umland shared the opinion that the Yeltsin era was by no means so positive, that Putins should not be viewed as negatively as Umland. On the other hand, one should not measure the development in Russia one-sidedly with western-liberal standards, rather one has to consider diverse socio-cultural and historical circumstances. Sutor comes to the cautious conclusion that the situation is more gray than black or white, "the development of Russia towards a more open, pluralistic-democratic system (however) also depends on the degree of political cleverness, with western politics (EU, NATO, USA On the other hand, democracy can be realized in very different forms that can take into account the specific conditions of each individual country. Surrounding areas, however, just as little as others insist on a specific form of democracy. Only Maresch criticizes the western value base in Umland's approach as such, by pleading for “political realism” against a “political theology of human rights” and asking the question whether liberal democracy is not an obsolete model at all.
