Life

In 1992 he received his doctorate. phil. with a work on the differentiation of literature as a functional system of modern society in the last third of the 18th century. In 2000 the habilitation followed with a system-theoretically oriented study of the history of literature on coevolution , i. H. the parallel development of the modern novel and intimate communication. Since 2002 several substitute professorships at the Ruhr University Bochum , the Humboldt University Berlin , the Bauhaus University Weimar and the University of Basel . In the summer semester 2008 visiting professor at the Comparative Literature Studies at the Leopold-Franzens University Innsbruck , in the winter semester 2008/2009 professor at the TU Dortmund. Since the summer semester 2009 professor for modern German literature studies at the University of Siegen . His research interests are social insects , self-descriptions of society, literature and its media, and the geopolitics of literature.

Werber advocates a literary-sociological and media-theoretical approach based on Niklas Luhmann and sociological systems theory and is considered to be the main exponent of the so-called "Bochum model" within system-theoretical literary studies. Together with Gerhard Plumpe u. a. he understands modern literature as an autonomous functional system that serves to entertain the public in the face of growing free time contingents and operates with the asymmetrical key difference "interesting" / "boring". The literary works are conceived as symbolically generalized communication media of the literary system.

Werber has been co-editor of the magazine for literary studies and linguistics at the University of Siegen since 2011 . In addition, Werber regularly provides articles for newspapers and magazines such as Merkur , Soziale Systeme , Telepolis , Literaturen , taz and Frankfurter Rundschau .
