Rudolf Schöpper (born April 20, 1922 in Dortmund , † December 5, 2009 in Münster ) was a German visual artist and caricaturist .

life and work

From 1949 Rudolf Schöpper studied painting and sculpture at the Werkkunstschule Köln and the Landeskunstschule in Hamburg . From 1955 he worked as an illustrator for various newspapers. In 1962 he switched to political caricature. His caricatures initially appeared irregularly in the union newspaper Einheit , in the Ruhr-Nachrichten , the Westfalenpost and the Kölnische Rundschau , before he moved to Münster in 1977 and was permanently employed by the Westfälische Nachrichten ( WN ). Until 1991 he drew caricatures regularly (almost daily) for the WN. In 1969 he was awarded the Theodor Wolff Prize .

In addition to the approximately 9,000 political caricatures, Schöpper created a large number of general drawings, book and magazine illustrations, portraits, paintings, sculptures and much more. This also includes numerous works on religious topics. His estate is in the University and State Library of Münster .

Rudolf Schöpper's caricatures combine wit , satire and irony with small taunts and cheek. Schöpper never insults, you can see a sympathy for his characters. The caricatured people are depicted quite "true to life" despite all the satirical exaggeration, you can usually recognize the people in the pictures very precisely.
