Career

Schonhoff, who was trained in the youth and amateur team of Schalke, was surprisingly used in the Bundesliga by the new coach Max Merkel on the 2nd match day of the 1975/76 season, August 16, 1975. In the 5-1 home win against MSV Duisburg, he played as a stopper alongside Libero Klaus Fichtel and together with goalkeeper Norbert Nigbur , Jürgen Sobieray and Helmut Kremers formed the host's defense. Max Merkel was replaced on March 10, 1976 by his previous assistant Friedel Rausch and in Rausch's second Bundesliga match on March 20, 1976, in a 4-1 defeat at Eintracht Braunschweig, the amateur came to his second Bundesliga appearance. He came on in the 55th minute for Vorstopper Ulrich van den Berg , but could not prevent the hat-trick of the Braunschweig striker Wolfgang Frank .

With his two appearances, he joins the ranks of Norbert Elgert (3-0), Dragan Mutibarič , Ulrich Bittcher (2-0 each) and Mathias Schipper and Friedhelm Schütte , each with a Bundesliga appearance at Schalke 04 in the 1975/76 season . He played in the Schalke amateur team until 1979 before joining TSV Feldhausen.
