Rudolf Sprüngli (born June 13, 1816 in Zurich ; † March 27, 1897 there ) was a Swiss confectioner and chocolatier . He was one of the founders of Lindt & Sprüngli .

Life

In 1845, Rudolf Sprüngli began making chocolate in his father David Sprüngli's pastry shop in the “Zum golden Ring” house on Marktgasse in Zurich under the “David Sprüngli & Son” company. He knew about the successes of François-Louis Cailler and Philippe Suchard and expected the new product to be a good sales market in Zurich society. The success was immediate and Rudolf Sprüngli bought a house in the Schleifetobel in Horgen in 1847 and set up his first chocolate factory and from then on produced in Zurich and Horgen. Twice a week he walked from Zurich to Horgen to see what was going on in the Horgen factory.

After his father's death in 1862, he bought the former Werdmühle in Zurich on today's Werdmühleplatz and the "Tiefenhof" house on today's Paradeplatz (then Neumarkt), where Confiserie Sprüngli still has its café and shop today. In 1870 the Werdmühle became the David Sprüngli & Sohn chocolate factory, which was demolished after 1900.

Sprüngli retired from professional life in 1892 and handed the company over to his two sons. David Robert Sprüngli inherited Confiserie Sprüngli, which he successfully continued, while Rudolf Sprüngli Junior took over the chocolate factory in Zurich. In 1898 the construction of the factory in Kilchberg began. In 1899, production was relocated there and the Lindt chocolate factory in Bern was bought and expanded into the Lindt & Sprüngli chocolate empire that still exists today.
