Rudolf Suchsland
Georg Rudolf Emil Suchsland (born April 24, 1839 in Frankfurt am Main , † February 12, 1921 in Swansea ) was a German engineer and mine director. He was in contact with Charles Darwin for the creation of the fourth German edition of Origin of Species .
Life
Rudolf Suchsland, son of the publisher Friedrich Emil Suchsland (1808–1903), studied mechanical engineering at the Karlsruhe Polytechnic . He later moved to the United Kingdom . Until 1861 he worked in Leeds and from at least 1871 in Swansea as director of a mine. In 1874 he received British citizenship.
As an intermediary for his father, Suchsland turned to Charles Darwin on March 10, 1866 and asked him for permission to make a new German edition of Origin of Species . He suggested Friedrich Rolle as translator . Suchsland and Darwin wrote a total of five times. Darwin ultimately turned down Suchsland's offer and stayed with E. Schweizerbart'sche Verlagbuchhandlung , which Julius Victor Carus chose for the translation of the next edition.
