Rudolf Wiszkoczil , also Wiskocsil, Wißkocsil, Wiskoczil, from 1919 Werian (born March 14, 1870 in Reindorf , then in Rudolfsheim , now in Vienna ; † August 17, 1925 in Vienna) was an Austrian architect from the school of Friedrich von Schmidt , whose Hauptwerk, the Alt-Ottakringer parish church , shows a moderate approach to contemporary modernism.

Life

Rudolf Wiszkoczil came as the son of Alexander Wiszkoczil and his wife Leopoldine, geb. Prandl, to the world, the marriage between his parents was only concluded a few months after his birth. His father, of Hungarian-Slovak origin and moved from Budapest to Vienna around 1870, was also an architect and builder. Wiszkoczil grew up in modest circumstances and was therefore not only exempt from school fees during his training at the State Trade School and the Academy of Fine Arts, but also received a scholarship. At the academy he attended the master schools of Friedrich von Schmidt and Viktor Luntz , where he dealt in particular with medieval church building.

After completing his studies, Wiszkoczil was likely to have worked in his father's office for a few years or had various internships before he started working as a freelance architect in Vienna in the mid-1890s. During this time, in addition to some residential buildings, he was mainly involved in building several churches. In 1910 Wiszkoczil was accepted as a construction assistant in the Ministry of Public Works and entrusted with the construction of the Alt-Ottakringer parish church, for whose inauguration he was awarded a high order by Emperor Franz Joseph .

After the end of the First World War, Wiszkoczil remained in the civil service and had his name changed to Werian . As part of his function in the construction department of the Ministry of Trade and Commerce, he was responsible for several publicly built residential buildings, but due to the fact that he was a civil servant architect, most of his work is not documented by name.

Rudolf Wiszkoczil-Werian, who had a son with his wife Adele, died in Vienna at the age of 55 and was buried at Ottakringer Friedhof , group P, row 10.
