Rudolf von Werdenberg (* around 1443 ; † September 2, 1505 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was Grand Prior of the German Order of St. John and Lord of Heitersheim from 1481 to 1505 .

Life

He was born as one of sixteen children and the youngest son of Count Johann IV von Werdenberg-Sargans († 1465) and his wife Elisabeth von Württemberg . He was a brother of the Augsburg bishop Johann II von Werdenberg . In the family genealogy he is Rudolf X. As Grand Commander of the German Johanniter he is referred to as Rudolf II.

Rudolf entered the Order of St. John in 1461 and fought against the Turks on Rhodes that same year . In 1480 he fought off a landing attempt by the Turks as a general of the Johanniter cavalry on Rhodes and also fought in the further course of the siege of Rhodes (1480) . Soon afterwards he returned to Germany and received the commander Bubikon , Wädenswil , Buchsee and Thunstetten .

In 1481 Rudolf became Grand Commander of the German Johanniter. He was also Komtur von Freiburg im Breisgau, but already had his seat largely in Heitersheim. In 1504 he acquired the villages of Uffhausen , Wendlingen and Sankt Georgen for the Johanniter , thereby strengthening the territorial basis for the later Principality of Heitersheim.

Rudolf had a dispute with Hans Heinrich von Baden († 1514), in the course of which he attacked a company on a bridal trip to Breisgau near Grißheim in 1489 . In addition to Hans Heinrich von Baden, the mayor of Basel, Johann von Bärenfels , also took part in the bridal trip. The company was robbed by Rudolf's 80-strong troop, and there were seriously injured. Troops from the cities of Basel , Bern and Solothurn then moved to Heitersheim Castle, which they looted. Half of the castle remained unscathed as it had been occupied by troops from the Austrian government. The conflict was then resolved through mediation by the front of Austria.

In 1498 Rudolf donated two glass windows for the village church of Bubikon , one of which shows a picture of him. He also created an overview of all German comers and their commander, which has been lost.

Rudolf died in Freiburg im Breisgau in 1505 and was buried in the local church of the Johanniterhaus.
