The Lords of Baden were an old family of Zähring ministers that later belonged to the Breisgau estates . The sex was wealthy in Breisgau and ruled the village of Liel until it died out in the male line in 1830.

The family was not related to the noble house of Baden .

history

The Burg Baden about Badenweiler (1650)

In 1130 Rudolf von Mansberg, the then Vogt of the Badenweiler rulership , was referred to as Rudolf von Baden for the first time. The name was adopted from Baden Castle . In the rest of the story the family is also named Badin or Badun in documents. As early as 1148, an Adalbert von Baden was announced as a servant to Duke Konrad I von Zähringen . In 1152 Heinrich and Rudolf von Baden are mentioned.

Like almost all noble families from Breisgau, those of Baden are also represented on the list of nobles who died in the Battle of Sempach (1386), namely with Götzman von Baden . In 1414 an Adebert von Baden is said to have accompanied the Margrave of Baden to the Council of Constance . In 1481, at a tournament in Mainz, the knighthood of Hans Heinrich von Baden was questioned, whereupon the barons of Staufen testify to the knighthood and the tribal community of the von Baden with the lords of Mansberg . In the Peasants' War , the Liel rule was also affected and the residents subsequently had to pay the Lords of Baden compensation of 120 guilders.

Catholic Church in Liel - burial place of the Lords of Baden

In 1410 Konrad von Baden was enfeoffed by Katharina of Burgundy with the place Liel , which it also bought in 1466 from the Charterhouse St. Margarethental in Basel, of which the Lords of Baden were bailiffs. The family was also wealthy in Neuchâtel , Breisach and other communities in Breisgau. When the family died out in 1830, it had patrimonial estates in Liel, Schliengen , Amoltern, Au and Sölden.

Between 1568 and 1580 the von Baden family owned the Rosenburg in Müllheim .

Johann Friedrich von Baden (1684–1688) and Franz Benedikt von Baden (1694–1707) were regional commander of the Deutschordensballei Swabia-Alsace-Burgundy .

In 1677 the family was granted honorary citizenship in Basel. In 1696 the Lords of Baden were elevated to the baron status by Emperor Leopold .

With Anton Karl, the male line of the sex died out in 1830. His nephew Bruno Freiherr von Türckheim zu Altdorf inherited him and also received approval for the association of names and coats of arms . From then on his descendants called themselves Barons von Türckheim , called von Baden .

Liel Castle

The former pond house stood by the church. Today's Schloss Liel is a two-story baroque building with a mansard roof , which was built around 1750. It bears the alliance coat of arms of the von Baden and von Rotberg in the gable .
