Liel (historically also Lielahe, Liehelahe, Lilaha, Liela = from the Celtic: the place where there are many vines) is a suburb of the municipality of Schliengen in the district of Lörrach in Baden-Württemberg .

Components

The village of Liel and the Karlshof farms (Erlenboden, Fohlenweide) belong to the district of Liel. In addition, the Kutz desert lies on the district.

Geography and location

Liel is a clustered village in a protected valley location in the Markgräfler hill country . Liel lies above the confluence of the Riedbächle in the Hohlebach. In the south the place borders on the Bad Bellingen district Hertingen and in the west on the main town Schliengen . In the east, the Kandern districts of Riedlingen and Feuerbach are the neighbors. In the north the village borders on the Schliengener district of Niedereggenen .

prehistory

In Munzingen Paleolithic (culture stage were Magdalénien ) tool finds from Jasper assigned to Jasper occurrence in Liel (in the Kutzmühle), which it is inferred that Liel have broken this rock before about 17 000 years ago people in the later spell the community.

In 1880 a bronze ax from the older Bronze Age (around 2000 BC) was found in the overburden of a quarry between Liel and Kutzmühle .

On the basis of cinder blocks that were found in the Lieler Gewann snipe stumps, the local use of a shaft furnace for smelting iron ore by the Celtic population of the Latène period could be proven during an archaeological excavation in the spring of 1996 . The Celts started mining iron ore in Liel.

A Roman settlement near Liel is suspected on the basis of individual finds of coins, bricks and stove tiles. In Liel there is said to have been a farm and two sacred buildings as early as the 9th century - that is, before the first known documentary mention.

history

Early history

The place belonged to the property of Guntram the rich . Because of his participation in the uprising against King Otto I, who later became Emperor Otto the Great , he lost his title of count and his goods at the Reichstag in Augsburg in 952 . Liel was awarded to the Einsiedeln monastery . In 1150 the place came to the Beinwil monastery and in 1426 the village is owned by the St. Margarethental Charterhouse in Basel. The barons of Baden were the bailiffs of the monastery and in 1469 they bought the goods of the monastery in Liel, after Konrad von Baden had been enfeoffed with the place Liel by Katharina von Burgund in 1410 . The Lords of Baden belonged to the Breisgau estates . Johann (Hans) Balthasar von Baden had the bath fountain built in Liel in 1560. Even after the transfer of the Upper Austrian Breisgau to the Electorate of Baden in 1805, they remained the landlords of the village until 1830 . They were inherited by the barons of Türckheim .

Administrative history

The administrative allocation of the municipality of Liel in the Grand Duchy of Baden changed several times. In 1807 she came to the Baden regional office in Rötteln and in 1813 to the district office in Kandern . From 1819 it belonged to the district office / district of Müllheim . On January 1, 1973 Liel was incorporated into Schliengen.

In the battle of Schliengen in 1796

The Battle of Schliengen was a battle of the First Coalition War , in which the armies of Austria under Archduke Charles of Austria and the French Republic under General Jean Moreau faced each other. It took place on October 24, 1796 in the Markgräflerland between Basel and Freiburg im Breisgau . The battlefield extended to Schliengen (with its today's districts of Mauchen, Liel, Obereggenen , Niedereggenen ), Steinenstadt , Sitzenkirch and Kandern . An Austrian column was set up under General Maximilian Baillet von Latour near Liel and in the Eggener Valley . The Latour Corps took Ober- and Niedereggenen and then limited themselves to mock battles, as they could not track their own artillery in the rain-soaked terrain.

Mining in Liel

Although traces of iron smelting in the district Liel more than 2000 years old, the reduction of was in historical times iron ore to the existing documents only in 1657 by Hans Friedrich von Baden revived that on 19 October 1657 by Archduke Ferdinand Karl with the bergregal belehnt has been. In 1795, the Upper Austrian Mining Authority took over the ore mining itself for a few years. The ore yield was never plentiful, but around 1811 there were 21 miners working in the Lieler pits, although there were once said to have been 80 men. The ore was delivered to the margravial ironworks in Kandern , Oberweiler and Hausen in Wiesental , but at times also to the Austrian works in Waldkirch and Wehr . Ore mining in Liel gradually ended around 1860.

Many traces of mining can still be seen today.

coat of arms

A six-pointed golden star in red. The star as the coat of arms of Liel already appears in the 19th century and could be derived from the coat of arms of the barons of Türckheim, the last landlords of Liel. The colors red and gold appear in the coat of arms of the von Türckheim family, but the six-pointed stars are black. The coat of arms in its current form was adopted by the municipality in 1904. In 1937 it was decided to change the coat of arms and the coat of arms of the barons of Baden was adopted. In fact, the coat of arms was not changed until 1952 and in 1960 the municipality returned to the current coat of arms.
