Life

education and profession

Fecht was a son of the Lutheran deacon Eberhard Friedrich Fecht. Johann Peter Hebel was one of the godparents and his girlfriend Gustave Fecht was an aunt of Karl Gustav. From 1827 to 1835 he attended the Lyceum in Karlsruhe and the universities in Tübingen and Halle . After passing the theological exam, he became a Protestant vicar in Wittenweier in 1835 and in Kork in 1837. In 1837 he also took exams in philological subjects and was employed as a trainee teacher at the Lyceum in Heidelberg . A year later he taught at the high school in Schopfheim , where he married Luise Fecht. In 1845 he moved to the grammar school in Lahr , where he received the title of professor in 1852. From 1853 to 1857 he had the first teaching and board position at the pedagogy in Lörrach and was also a deacon. In 1857 he was transferred to Durlach due to a love affair , where he initially took on the second apprenticeship and gave lessons in French and natural history. In 1872 he was given the previously denied board position in Durlach, which he held until his retirement in 1879. In 1880 he moved from Durlach to Karlsruhe, where he died in 1891.

The historian

In 1850 Fecht published the nationalist, anti-republican volume of poems, Pictures from the Baden Revolution . In addition to his teaching activities and after his retirement, Fecht dealt with the local history of his respective places of residence. While working in Lörrach, he prepared the publication “The southwestern Black Forest and the adjoining Rhine region” . In the first part he described the history of the area, followed by a detailed description of the Grand Ducal Baden districts of Waldshut , Säckingen , Lörrach , Schopfheim , as well as in other volumes of the district of Schönau and the district of Müllheim , covering all communities. He compiled the content from the existing literature, but also from additional information from local officials.

In 1869 and 1887 Fecht published on the history of Durlach and Karlsruhe and in 1890 on the Allerheiligen monastery .

In addition to the monographs , Fecht also wrote articles for newspapers and magazines such as the Lahrer Hinkenden Boten and the magazine for the history of the Upper Rhine .

Honors

In 1911, Fechtstrasse was named in his honor in Karlsruhe. Since 2004 the Friends of the Pfinzgaumuseum - Historischer Verein Durlach eV have been awarding the Karl Gustav Fecht Prize .
