Life

The son of a timber merchant attended elementary school in Neustadt in the Black Forest and from 1894 to 1903 the Berthold-Gymnasium in Freiburg , where he passed his Abitur. After his military service at the age of one , he studied civil engineering from 1904 to 1909 at the Technical University of Karlsruhe , from which he graduated with an engineering diploma. There he became a member of the Karlsruhe fraternity Tulla , then still known as "AIV Tulla".

From 1909 Sutter worked as a journalist and was a correspondent for the Frankfurter Zeitung in Karlsruhe. He joined the German People's Party and was active there as party secretary. In the twenties he became director of the Frankfurt trade fair and acted as a central advisor to the then mayor of Frankfurt, Ludwig Landmann . In the context of its expansive and innovative local politics (for example at New Frankfurt ), Sutter was often active as an organizer and source of ideas, for example for the Frankfurt International Exhibition "Music in the Lives of Nations" or for the establishment of the Goethe Prize , which was founded in 1927. Sutter was also a member of the Bund Rheinischer Dichter with its founder and chairman Alfons Paquet , who also played a prominent role in the cultural life of Frankfurt under Landmann, who was close friends. Although Sutter stood up for democratic positions and the Weimar state before 1933, he joined the NSDAP in 1938.

At the end of the 1920s, Sutter was chairman of the German Advertising Association, which dissolved in 1933 and joined the new "National Socialist Reich Student Council of German Advertising Experts". As chairman of the state foreign traffic association Karlsruhe he held in the 3rd Reich a. a. "Education courses on traffic advertising". In 1940 he wrote two “Introductions to the restaurant and hotel trade” for “German girls” and “German boys” for the “Reich Tourism Group” of the Reich Chamber of Commerce.

In 1955 he participated in the organization of the state exhibition "Baden-Württemberg" in Stuttgart and in 1960 he organized the exhibition " JP Hebel " in Karlsruhe on the occasion of the poet's 200th birthday.

Otto Ernst Sutter was married three times. In 1910 he married Ilse Emma Luise Wolf and in 1924 the soprano Beatrice Sutter-Kottlar . From 1931 to 1937 he lived as a freelance writer at Liel Castle near Schliengen. In his third marriage, Sutter was married to actress Lina Carstens from 1941 until his death and lived in Gengenbach from 1942 to 1970. He had a son and two daughters.

His literary work is mostly located in the landscape of the Upper Rhine and in the Markgräflerland . Among other things, Sutter also appeared as a passionate advocate of landscape and monument protection in southern Baden . Together with others, he made a significant contribution to the preservation of the historical cityscape of Gengenbach. He also campaigned for the preservation of the old wooden bridge near Forbach and the landscape around the Mummelsee .

In addition to his writing, he continued to work as a journalist for various newspapers, such as the Badische Zeitung , in which he wrote numerous articles as a country writer under the pseudonym Jodokus Vydt. He was also connected to radio and television, where he mainly worked in the Freiburg regional studio of Südwestfunk . He was regularly represented on ZDF in the series Die Drehscheibe and Mosaik - The magazine for the older generation .

In memory of his second wife Beatrice Sutter-Kottlar, Otto Ernst Sutter had a wooden cross erected in the “ Auf der Eckt ” nature reserve above the Eggenertal , which is still a popular destination for hikers today. The monument is widely known as the " Sutter Cross ".
