The Mummelsee is a Karsee at 1028.5  m above sea level. NN height on the slope of the Hornisgrinde in the Black Forest . It is 3.7 hectares and 18 meters deep. It is one of the most visited lakes in Baden-Württemberg , as it is located directly on the Black Forest High Road . The tourist facilities on the lake form the Mummelsee residential area of the Seebach community in the Ortenau district .

geography

The Mummelsee is bordered in the west, north and east by steep, wooded mountain slopes and has a circumference of about 800 meters. To the west the lakeshore rises to the Katzenkopf ( 1123  m above sea level ) and to the north to the Hornisgrinde , the highest mountain in the northern Black Forest at 1163 meters . Only to the south are the shores of the Mummelsee (almost) flat, there is the Berghotel Mummelsee and the nearby St. Michaelskapelle.

Surname

According to the municipality of Seebach, the name of the Mummelsee goes back to the white water lilies (Nymphaea alba), popularly known as Mummels , which are said to have occurred there in large numbers in the past (however, the yellow pond rose (Nuphar lutea) is also known as Mummel ). The legend of the mermaids ( mermaids ) called mummies may also play a role in the derivation of the water's name (the white water lily is also known as the mermaid ). The water of the Mummelsee has a pH value below five, is sour-peaty and poor in nutrients. Therefore there are no fish and no water lilies in the lake.

Gastronomy and commerce

Favored by the course of the Black Forest High Road, the lake also became interesting for tourism. A larger building with a hotel, two restaurants, a grocery and souvenir shop and a pedal boat rental are located right next to the large visitor parking lot.

The hotel building was largely destroyed by fire on May 5, 2008. The cause was presumably negligent arson . After the fire, the hotel was rebuilt in the Black Forest style and opened on March 26, 2010, the usable area increased from 2385 to 3690 square meters.

The Mummelsee in literature

  • There are a number of legends entwined around the lake, which was once deeply isolated and without road connection . According to a legend, a mermaid lived in the lake , who gave help to the people at night and danced, sang and played with them.
  • The legends inspired Eduard Mörike to write his poem Die Geister am Mummelsee .
  • Grimmelshausen had his Simplicissimus abducted by underwater inhabitants into the lake and diving to the center of the earth. The described system of water connections from the earth's surface to the center of the earth could have been inspired by the Platonic myth about the fate of the soul after its death (Dialogue Phaidon 107d – 115a).
  • The editor and saga collector August Schnezler tells in three poems: The Mummelsee , The Lilien and Mummelsee's Revenge, legendary events around the lake can be read in his volumes of poetry.

Mummelsee circular route and art path

A largely natural circular route previously led around the Mummelsee, which, despite the high level of visitor traffic, still had numerous bottlenecks and was characterized by striking tree roots. In 2014 it was made barrier-free. Works of art by modern artists were installed along the way a few years ago.

Transport links

Parking spaces for visitors to the lake are on the south bank. Hiking buses run to Baden-Baden , Achern and Freudenstadt every day . At the weekend there are also direct connections to Oppenau , and once on Saturdays and Sundays to Offenburg . The Baden-Württemberg ticket and the KONUS guest card are valid on all routes .
