Rudy Stevenson

Rudolf "Rudy" Stevenson (* 1929 in New York City ; † December 12, 2010 in Berlin ) was an American blues , soul and jazz guitarist , flautist , music producer and composer .

Life

Stevenson first played the saxophone and turned to the rhythm guitar due to the limitations of the local cabaret law . At the beginning of his career he performed with Lloyd Price . In the 1960s he played five years in the backing band of Nina Simone , with whom he recorded a total of nine albums (including I Put a Spell on You or My Baby Just Cares for Me ) and his compositions such as Ain't No Use and to their repertoire I'm Gonna Leave You . He also worked with Sheila Jordan , Wynton Kelly (for whom he wrote Out Front ), Cedar Walton ( Soul Cycle , 1969) and Dexter Gordon .

His compositions were u. a. Recorded by George Benson , Dexter Gordon, Jocelyn B. Smith and Joe Zawinul . Herbie Mann recorded Comin 'Home Baby in 1966; Another well-known song was Don't Cha Hear Me Calling to Ya , the back of the 5th Dimension hit Aquarius . In the early 1980s he was briefly a member of the Duke Ellington Orchestra directed by Mercer Ellington , with whom he participated in the RCA album Duke Ellington's Sophisticated Ladies (1981). In 1988 he moved to Berlin, where he has since worked as a composer and producer (with Tayo Awosusi, among others ) and directed various bands. He worked with funk and soul singer Lia Andes for several years, wrote songs for her and recorded several albums ( This Masquerade ). He also released his own albums (such as Blues March, Vol. 1 ) on his RSI label, performed regularly in Berlin's Yorckschlösschen , a. a. with his Rudy Stevenson All-Stars , which included Bobby Durham .
