Ruhrbania

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ruhrbania is a decentralized urban development project in Mülheim an der Ruhr . It comprises several individual projects in five sub-areas. The planning for this began shortly after the turn of the millennium. The core project is a promenade on the Ruhr . This should connect the city center with the river and attract restaurants and service providers. Other sub-projects include a start-up center , the expansion of the town hall into a culture and congress center, a museum mile and various commercial areas.

The Ruhr promenade

The Ruhr flows over a distance of 14 kilometers over the city of Mülheim. 12.3 kilometers of it are largely undeveloped; only a shorter stretch at the Rhein-Ruhr-Hafen and at the Friedrich Wilhelms-Hütte is built on and not directly accessible. In the inner city of Mülheim there was therefore little to see of the Ruhr. The lack of access to the Ruhr was made jointly responsible by experts for the bad situation in Mülheim city center, which was expressed in the migration of high-quality retail and falling rents.

This is where the idea of revitalizing the historic Ruhr promenade began: it was to connect the city with the river through various construction measures. This should be done through the establishment of restaurants and services (in the northern part of the promenade) and residential buildings (in the southern part). The city was to move closer to the river by opening a main traffic artery: the Ruhrstraße in this area was to be closed to car traffic. The former building of the Mülheimer Stadtbad with an attached combined heat and power unit was then converted into condominiums (Palais am Stadtkai) by Vivacon AG . The medl GmbH thermal power station was relocated to the other side of the Ruhr.

In 2004, the Düsseldorf office RKW Rhode Kellermann Wawrowsky won an architectural competition for the redesign of the promenade . The winning design included a small recreational harbor basin; Stairs, plants and leisure areas should structure the promenade. Several buildings were demolished to implement the design, including part of the town hall and the old city library, which has now found a new place in the media house in the middle of the pedestrian zone.

The building complex on site I at the town hall was completed in mid-2013 and was already partially occupied by that time.

The Ruhr promenade is intended to invite people to “stroll” under the Schloßbrücke to the Ruhranlage and the water station - as was already possible at the turn of the century. Wild parking and pollution of the Ruhr bank in this area should finally be a thing of the past from 2014.

Resistance to the promenade

Especially against the redesign of the Ruhr promenade (including the removal of the historical green spaces) as a core project of Ruhrbania, there have been protests and numerous public hearings since the start of planning in 2003. In the same year, the citizens' initiative Pro Mülheim sought a petition for citizens , but it failed. The Council declared it formally inadmissible.

The incubator

The start-up center is intended to make it as easy as possible for young entrepreneurs to start their own business by offering affordable rents and facilitating network building. It opened in September 2005. The start-up center is located in a former Siemens PG / KWU administration building in the Mülheim harbor district. It was originally the parent company of August Thyssen , the founder of the Thyssen Group.

The culture and congress center in the town hall

Cultural events, such as theater performances and concerts, have always taken place in the town hall. As part of the Ruhrbania project, the town hall is to be expanded into an event and congress center. For this purpose, the ballroom will be converted into an event room, which can be divided into two if necessary. There are also three conference rooms in the foyer. The official inauguration took place in November 2006. The first major congress had already taken place in the converted hall in September 2006.

Commercial locations

As part of Ruhrbania, various industrial areas are marketed, some of which are located some distance from the river: the Styrum industrial park , Düsseldorfer Straße, Siemens-Technopark, the Rhein-Ruhr-Hafen, the Rauen quarry and the Mannesmannallee industrial area.

Museum Mile

The museum mile is intended to bundle various museums, some of which have existed for a long time, under a new brand name. The following museums belong to the Museum Mile:
