The ruin Günzelburg , also called Greifenburg , Gryffenburg and Denzelburg , is the ruin of a rock castle at 685 m above sea level. NN high rock tower above the village of Weiler bei Seißen , a district of the city of Blaubeuren , in the Alb-Donau district in Baden-Württemberg .
history
The castle was built in the late 13th century by Grif von Berkach, probably as a successor to a castle on the nearby Wachtfels. The Lords of Berkach were ministerials to the Counts of Berg. The subsequent owners at the end of the 14th century were the lords of Weiler and the lords of Westernach , Ulrich von Westerstetten in 1460 and the Blaubeuren monastery after 1460. The name of Denzelburg Castle mentioned in 1464 , probably Tünzelburg, probably goes back to a later owner of the castle.
Around 1477 the complex was dilapidated, it is said: " The ruins of the Gintzelburg Castle, which protrudes over the house (= the Franciscan monastery) on the top of the rock, have damaged this house ... "
Remnants of the wall are still preserved from the former castle complex, which had a hook-shaped shield wall. The core castle had a base area of about 20 by 21 meters.
