The ruins of the Henneburg are located in Prenning in the municipality of Deutschfeistritz in Styria. Its history goes back to the middle of the 12th century.

location

The ruins of the Spornburg are located west of Deutschfeistritz in the Prenning cadastral community . It stands on a ridge that branches off in an easterly direction from the Himberg to the Feistergraben . This rocky crest drops steeply to the north, east and south. The castle is accessed from the west over a rocky ridge.

history

The castle was probably built by Konrad von Feistritz around the middle of the 12th century . The first documentary mention comes from the year 1147. Around 1319 it was abandoned again. It was located again in the 19th century, but was forgotten again. It was rediscovered in the middle of the 20th century and measured and examined for the first time towards the end of this century.

description

Since the castle was abandoned quite early, its high medieval character has been preserved. It is a rare example of a small, structurally unchanged, Romanesque castle. The complex was protected in the west by a neck ditch running in a north-south direction . The neck ditch makes a bend to the east in the northern part of the castle, along the castle hill, and from there was accompanied by a wall. Originally, a polygonal curtain wall around 1.5 meters thick ran along the demolition site. On the south side, a part about 15 meters long and 6 meters high has been preserved. The circular wall was built around 1200 from relatively regular ashlar masonry made of hewn limestone with a wall core made of stones set in a herringbone pattern.

The irregularly square tower house with bevelled corners made of hewn stone blocks was located in the northwest corner of the castle courtyard. Today only a few remains of the wall on the west side and the corners as well as elevations in the terrain indicate the structure. In the courtyard there was probably a residential building that is no longer preserved today.
