The Romanian wolffish ( Sabanejewia romanica ) is a benthic freshwater fish species from the family Cobitidae (wolffish) within the order of the Cypriniformes (carp-like).

Distribution, habitat and biology

The species occurs only in Romania and is native to the catchment area of the Danube . It was found in the Argeș , Olt , Jiu , Mureș and Tapolitza river systems .

The Romanian wolffish prefers stretches of river with medium to high flow velocity, sandy bottom and clear water. Here he searches the ground for worms and insect larvae that serve as food. It spawns between May and July.

The species is classified by the IUCN as "potentially endangered" due to increasing water pollution and the construction of dams along the river systems.

features

Sabanejewia romanica reaches a maximum length of 12 cm, but most specimens are 8-10 cm long. Their drawing is characteristic of the species. On the flanks of the body there is a central row of 8 to 13 dark, often horizontally elongated spots, which are connected by a fine, black line. The black dots on the caudal fin base, which occur frequently in the genus, are only weakly developed.
