Sabanejewia is a genus of benthic freshwater fish of the family of loach (Cobitidae). The Sabanejewia species were originally assigned to the genus Cobitis , but differ from these, among other things, in the absence of Canestrini scales and the smaller number of Gambetta zones (4 in Cobitis and 2 in Sabanejewia ). Biochemical and genetic studies also support the separation of the two genera. The genus Sabanejewia is native to Europe as well as in the catchment area of the Caspian Sea and the Aral Sea . Most species prefer a gravelly substrate.
