Sabanejewia bulgarica is a freshwater fish species of the family Cobitidae (wolffish) within the order of the Cypriniformes (carp-like).

features

Sabanejewia bulgarica reaches a maximum standard length of 12 cm. The body height corresponds to 16.5 to 20% of the standard length. A row of 4 to 9 (rarely up to 10) dark spots runs mediolaterally (half-way) along the sides of the body . A number of small spots just below the mediolateral spots and black pigmentation between the spots are missing. The body above the mediolateral spots is completely unpigmented or there are a few dark spots. On the upper side, along the back, there are another 5 to 8 (rarely 10) dark spots. According to Jászfalusi, the color of the body is brownish violet on the upper side, the abdominal area yellowish. According to Iftime, the basic color is variable from yellowish-brown to rose-red-brown and up to a purple to pale purple shade. A violet-metallic sheen can also occur with other basic colors.

A ventral crest of body fat on the tail peduncle , located towards the abdomen, is absent or less developed than the dorsal (located towards the back) fat ridge. The attachment of the dorsal fin lies above the attachment of the pelvic fin. The body scales usually overlap, but in some specimens they can just touch each other. The suborbital spine (sting sitting on the eye) is thick and robust.

According to Jászfalusi, the fin formula is D II – III / 7, P II / 7–8, V II / 5, C 14 (instead of 16 according to Drensky), 40 to 43 vertebrae, 7 to 11 pharyngeal teeth . He describes the iris as black and the pupils surrounded by a gold ring.

distribution

Sabanejewia bulgarica occurs in the Danube catchment area in the lower and middle Danube upstream to Bratislava in Slovakia and only penetrates the lowest sections of its tributaries. It is also common in the Tisza in Hungary and Slovakia.

Way of life

Sabanejewia bulgarica lives in large lowland rivers and usually prefers deeper water. Spawning takes place in the Danube and in the mouths of some tributaries. According to Jászfalusi's report on "a new species of fish for the Hungarian fauna", the species prefers strongly flowing water with a stony bottom. During spawning time, the animals migrate in larger groups to the confluences of fast-flowing brooks where they spawn. They look for their food at night and are therefore rarely found during the day.

Taxonomy

After Iftime (2002) taxonomy of the English is loaches Golden mentioned type Sabanejewia dispute. In 1929 Vladykov put a group of Cobitis species in the genus Sabanejewia , which was mostly regarded as a subgenus of Cobitis until the 1970s . In 1963, Nalbant confirmed Sabaneevia as a valid genre and this position was gradually adopted by all authors.

Sabanejewia bulgarica was 1928 Drensky as Cobitis bulgarica first described . In 1931 Vladykov synonymous Sabanejewia bulgarica with Sabanejewia balcanica . From Băcescu, Sabanejewia balcanica was again viewed in 1943 as a subspecies of Sabanejewia aurata . Bănărescu (1948) was the first to observe the considerable intergradation of cobitis ( Sabanejewia ) balcanica and cobitis ( Sabanejewia ) bulgarica and thus also saw Sabanejewia bulgarica as a subspecies of the golden loach ( Sabanejewia aurata ), a view shared by Jászfalusi in 1948. The working group Oliva, Balon and Frank went even further in 1952 and interpreted in the subspecies only an infrasubspecific (intra-subspecies) variety of Sabanejewia aurata balcanica (Balkan gold loach ). While Bănărescu (1953, 1954, 1964) continued to declare the species as a subspecies, Vasiljeva and Vasiljev (1988) again viewed Sabanejewia bulgarica as a separate species alongside Sabanejewia aurata .

The type described by Georgi Schischkoff 1932 Cobitis albicoloris based on only a poorly conserved, bleached specimen of Sabanejewia and was of Rensky 1947/1948 to Cobitis ( Sabanejewia ) bulgarica synonymised .
