action

A miller takes in a nobleman who was injured while hunting. He brags in front of him that his daughter can spin straw into gold, whereupon the stranger reveals himself to be his king and orders him to bring his daughter to his castle the next day so that he can put her to the test.

The desperate miller's daughter is threatened with death at the castle if she doesn't get the straw spun into gold overnight. A magical little man appears to her who does the work for her in exchange for her collar. Delighted with the work, the king gives her another night of work, which she buys with her ring and leaves again to the magical little man. On the third night the miller's daughter is supposed to perform the miracle one last time, after which, the king promises her, he will take her as his wife. But she can't offer the little man anything, so she reluctantly declares that she is ready to give him her firstborn child.

When the little man visits the queen to claim his promised wages, the queen begs not to have to give it to her child. She then has three days to guess the name of the little man. If she succeeds, she can keep the king's son. Throughout the kingdom she lets her servants search for male first names, but on both the first and the second day she fails to solve the riddle. Her page tells her that he saw a little man dancing around a fire in a dark forest, who kept singing oh, how good that nobody knows what my name is, what my name is . The page gets the order to visit the little man again to find out his name and can overhear him singing at night. Oh, how good that nobody knows that I'm called Rumpelstiltskin . Back in the castle, he shares his experience with the queen, who can finally tell the magical man his real name at the last meeting.
