Rune is a computer game from the US development studio Human Head Studios from 2000. The action adventure is set in Norse mythology .

Gameplay

Rune belongs to the hack-and-slay genre and is played from the third-person perspective . The player has various medieval weapons to choose from, with which he must fight his opponents in the game. This includes swords, axes, battle hammers and shields that are used for defense. You can also cut off parts of your opponent's body and use them as a weapon. The main focus of the game is on combat.

action

Ragnar , a young Viking , is the only one to survive the massacre in his village. Driven by a thirst for revenge, he tries to track down those who betrayed his tribe. The traitor Conrack committed the massacre of his own tribe, because he wants to destroy the sacred rune stones that Loki , the outcast son of Odin , hold captive in order to free him. Ragnar gets help on his vengeance campaign from Odin himself.

Game world

The more than 40 single player levels are strongly influenced by Norse mythology. Icy caves, snow-covered villages, but also gloomy dungeons and caves filled with lava occur. On his way Ragnar encounters, among other things, dwarves , dark Vikings, goblins , ice beasts, crabs, carnivorous plants and the undead that he has to face in battle. The only ally is Odin, who occasionally appears in ghost form and provides the hero with advice.

technology

Rune was produced with the Unreal Engine , which includes various graphic effects such as billowing lava and water, glow effects in the dark, particle effects and destructible objects.

Development history

The German version of the game has been completely localized. The voice recordings were carried out professionally. The German version was published uncut and was approved by the USK from the age of 18. Rune was indexed by the federal testing agency for media harmful to minors, which was possible according to the youth protection law at the time, despite the age approval by the USK.

In 2002, Rune released the so-called Gold Pack , which includes the add-on Halls of Valhalla . This offers two new game modes (arena, headball), 33 new multiplayer maps and many new skins.

An adapted PlayStation 2 version with the title Rune: Viking Warlord was also released in 2001 . This is graphically worse than the PC version and therefore with partially modified or reduced levels. However, compared to the PC version, this version also offers some new game sections and opponents. Although the level of violence is identical to the PC version, the PlayStation 2 version was not indexed and was also released from the age of 16.

In 2004, the headers of the source code files were freely published by Human Head Studios.

After the last official patch 1.07, the player community worked on community patches (1.08b), which mainly corrected multiplayer game errors.

The game was re-released on June 13, 2012 on Steam as Rune Classic version 1.10. Digital sales were handled by Nine Realms, the publishing subsidiary of Human Head Studios.

On October 24, 2013, Rune Classic was also released on GOG.com .

successor

In August 2017, Human Head Studios announced an official successor called Rune: Ragnarok . The action role-playing game will again take place in Norse mythology, but will offer an open game world . Rune: Ragnarok will be released in 2018 at the earliest for Microsoft Windows , Xbox One and PlayStation 4 .
