history

Mario Alberto Silva

The Indian-born American Rupa Marya grew up in her childhood with her grandparents in Punjab, and later went to school in Aix-en-Provence in France. After her family settled in San Francisco, in addition to her medical studies, she gained musical experience solo in clubs with self-written songs. When she met the cellist Ed Baskerville, they performed together. Gradually, other musicians joined. After the EP La Pêcheuse (“Die Fischerin”) in 2006, their official debut CD eXtraOrdinary rendition was released two years later . The name of the album refers to the American judicial practice of extraordinary extradition, for example of terrorist suspects. In 2009, Este Mundo ("This World") was the band's second album.

On the 2012 album Build , Rupa, who wrote and composed most of the songs, sings most of the tracks in English, but some pieces also in French and Spanish. There is also a cover version of the Clash track Guns of Brixton , which the rapper Black Nature from Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars sings along. On their European tour in November 2012 they also came to Berlin, Cologne and Bochum. The title track Build is dedicated to Indian farmers and urban gardening . The unusual cover artwork can be opened five times and reveals a peephole in it to look through at a small plant with roots. The album became album of the week 47/2012 on WDR Funkhaus Europa. The mestizo sound is mixed with Russian cello, violin, kora , accordion and samples from people on Tahrir Square in Cairo, Chile and Greece.

For 2013 the doctor and musician Rupa planned a sabbatical year from the medical profession in order to devote herself entirely to the vocation of music.

The album OVAL , which was released in September 2015, contains 2 new songs and 6 newly arranged older pieces and will initially be distributed exclusively via iTunes and at upcoming concerts.
