Russ Hamilton (born January 19, 1932 in Everton , Liverpool , † October 11, 2008 in Buckley, Flintshire , Wales ; actually Ronald Hulme ) was a British songwriter and singer.

biography

Russ Hamilton grew up in Liverpool and worked as a salesman and later as a "redcoat" (a kind of entertainer) for the resort chain Butlins . Together with colleagues, he founded a skiffle group. Together with them he recorded the single We Will Make Love in 1957 , which promptly reached number 2 on the British charts. The single was also released in the United States , where B-side Rainbow reached number 4 on the Billboard charts. This made him the first star from Great Britain to be successful on both sides of the Atlantic. In Great Britain he was awarded a gold record .

Surprised by the sudden success, he remained loyal to Butlins and tried to combine both activities. The successor single Wedding Ring reached the top 20 of the British singles charts. However, other singles in Great Britain failed. In 1960 he signed a contract with the MGM Records label for the USA , but was unable to achieve any further success there, despite numerous singles. He toured there with the Rolling Stones and appeared on the " Patti Page Show ". In the early 1960s, however, his music career was over.

In 1967 he appeared again as "Redcoat" and in 1986 he played We Will Make Love in the musical Grease at a performance in Chester .
