The 1996/97 season was the second season of the Russian women's ice hockey championship ( Russian Чемпионат России по хоккею с шайбой среди женщин ), the top division in Russian women's ice hockey .
For the second time in a row, the team, renamed ZSK WWS Moscow , secured the championship title ahead of Spartak Yekaterinburg and Lokomotive Krasnoyarsk .

The second season of the Russian Women's Championship was held from September 14, 1996 to February 27, 1997 with six teams. In addition, the women's national team of Kazakhstan took part as a visiting team, but only completed two of the three tournaments. The team of Kristallotschka Saratov withdrew after the first tournament from playing.
The tournament took place in the form of three tournaments, which took place in Samara (September 14-19, 1996), Yekaterinburg (December 7-12, 1996) and Omsk (February 23-27, 1997), with five per team Games were played out. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.

At the second tournament Irina Gaschennikowa , Schanna Scheltschkowa and Tatjana Malysheva were recognized as the best players. Top scorer was Tatjana Zarewa and Swetlana Trefilowa , both from ZSK WWS.
