The Russian Islamic Institute ( Российский Исламский Институт / Rossijski Islamski Institut) in Kazan , until 2009 Russian Islamic University is a non-state higher educational institution in Russia founded in 1998. It is located in the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan . Its rector is Rafik Muhametschowitsch Muhametschin . It has branches in Central Asia and beyond. It is a central institution for imam training. The Islam in Tatarstan is largely a Sunni Islam with Hanafi characteristics.

The Institute is a member of the Federation of the Universities of the Islamic World (English: Federation of the Universities of the Islamic World), an organization within the framework of the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization; abbr .: ISESCO ).

Three institutions were involved in the establishment of the institution: the Council of Muftis of Russia , the Spiritual Administration of Tatarstan Muslims ( Духовное управление мусульман Республики Татарстан ) and the Institute for the History of the Academy of Sciences of Tatarstan .

At the institute you can study Islamic theology, Islamic studies and the Koran (in a faculty called Hafiz Koran training center), Arabic or secular sciences.

Kamil Samigullin , the new Grand Mufti of Tatarstan, received part of his training here.
