Russula subsect. Xerampelinae is a subsection of the genus Russula , which is within the Viridantes section. The subsection was originallydefinedby R. Singer . The definition of the subsection differin some pointsfor Bon and Singer. While Russula xerampelina is stillthe type of red herring deaf with Singer, it is with Bon Russula graveolens , the violet herring deaf .

features

The subsection was originally defined by R. Singer. According to Singer, the section contains pigeons with white meat, which later turns yellow or brown or turns brown and has a mild taste. The fruit bodies have a typical odor of trimethylamine (herring or crab odor). With iron sulphate, it turns green. The spore powder is cream-colored to ocher in color. The edge of the hat can be a bit sharp, but is usually blunt. In this respect, Singer's definition agrees with Bon's. At Bon, the subsection contains medium-sized to robust pigeons that only develop a mycorrhiza with deciduous trees. The type species is Russula graveolens , the flesh-purple herring-deaf.
