Life

Rustum Roy was born in Ranchi in the Indian state of Bihar. He graduated from Patna University in the state's capital and received his B. Sc. in the field of physical chemistry and in 1944 at this university the M. Sc. In 1945 he went to the USA, where he received his doctorate in 1948 at the Pennsylvania State University on a topic on ceramic research, where he became an assistant professor in 1951 and a full professor in 1957. In 1961 he received US citizenship . He also taught as a Distinguished Professor at Arizona State University and was visiting professor of medicine at the University of Arizona . He has published more than 700 scientific papers in the field of mineralogy and geochemistry as well as ceramic research and other branches of materials science. He was the first director of the independent interdisciplinary Materials Research Laboratory at Pennsylvania State University and was co-founder of the Materials Research Society (MRS) in the USA in 1973 and its President in 1977.

He has received numerous international awards and honors. He was an honorary member of the Indian Academy of Sciences and the Ceramic Society of Japan. In 1973 he was elected a member of the National Academy of Engineering . In 1989 he became a Fellow of the American Physical Society .

His special interest was the integration of science, technology and society. He was a scientific advisor (Science Adviser) to several governors of the state of Pennsylvania and worked in the world forum of Mikhail Gorbachev . In several writings he expressed himself on the relationship between religion and science and technology. The contributions to so-called integrative medicine and homeopathy published in the last years of his life are very controversial .
