Ruth Rissing-van Saan

Ruth Rissing-van Saan (born January 25, 1946 in Neuss ) is a German lawyer and was presiding judge at the Federal Court of Justice .

Life

Ruth Rissing-van Saan first attended a convent school in Neuss . She began studying law at the Ruhr University in Bochum in 1966 . After completing her studies, her legal clerkship and after completing her doctorate , she began her career in the judiciary. After a judge on probation at the official and the district court of Bochum had worked, it was in 1975 appointed a judge for life. In 1988 she was appointed judge at the Federal Court of Justice; In 2002 she took over the chairmanship of the 2nd criminal senate. On January 31, 2011, Rissing-von Saan retired upon reaching the age limit.

In 2008 Ms. Rissing-van Saan was appointed honorary professor at the University of Bochum. She is co-editor of the Leipzig Commentary on the Criminal Code . Rissing-van Saan is a member of the Board of Trustees of the German Palliative Foundation . She is also the chairwoman of the Die Hegge educational institute in Warburger Land .

Jurisprudence

The Senate of the Federal Court of Justice, headed by her, made the final decision in the proceedings against the “ cannibals of Rotenburg ” ( BGHSt 50, 80), in the Siemens corruption scandal, and ruled in 2009 that senior editors of the public broadcaster were officials. In 2008, the verdict for the murder of an inmate of the Siegburg correctional facility by fellow prisoners also caused a stir . The Senate of the Federal Court of Justice, led by her, issued an important decision on euthanasia on June 25, 2010 .

Awards

Ruth Rissing-van Saan was awarded the Heinrich Pera Prize in December 2017 in Halle (Saale) for her significant participation in the case law that is groundbreaking for palliative medicine (judgment on the so-called “justified termination of treatment” (BGHSt 55, 191)). The prize has been awarded since 2016 by the Heinrich Pera Hospice and Palliative Center, a merger of the three facilities Hospiz Halle am St. Elisabeth-Krankenhaus gGmbH, Elisabeth Mobil and Krankenhaus St. Elisabeth and St. Barbara Halle (Saale) GmbH. With the award of the prize, the partners of the center honor people who have made a special contribution to promoting the concept of hospice and palliative care and its development, strengthening and anchoring in the consciousness of society.
