Sándor Cséfay

Sándor Cséfay or Cséfai [ ˈʃaːndor ˈtʃeːfɒ.i ] (born July 13, 1904 in Budapest ; † September 2, 1984 ibid) was a Hungarian field handball player and coach. Today he is considered to be the founder of the sport of handball in Hungary.

Sándor Cséfay, who had previously participated in the Workers' Olympics, was the first to establish handball in Hungary. He started to train some players for the national team. The first tournament of the newly formed team was the handball tournament of the 1936 Summer Olympics . They lost their first game 22-0 against the favored German team , but since they could win their second game against the United States 7-2, they qualified for the final round. There you had no chance and all three games were lost quite clearly. In the end, the team was left with the ungrateful fourth place behind the teams from Germany, Austria and Switzerland . He was also a member of the team and played three games in which he did not score a goal.

At the field handball world championship in 1938 , the Hungarian team won their preliminary round match 10: 6 against Denmark . In the semifinals they lost again significantly with 14: 3 against Germany. With the 10-2 win against Sweden in the third place match, Sándor Cséfay was able to win the bronze medal with the Hungarian team.
