World men's field handball championship 1938
The 1st men's field handball world championship took place from July 7th to 10th, 1938 in the German Reich under the leadership of the International Amateur Handball Federation (IAHF). World champions became the team of the German Reich, which could win all of their games.
Ten teams took part, all from Europe: Denmark, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Sweden, Switzerland, Czechoslovakia and Hungary. It was the only World Cup without Austria, since it had been part of the German Reich since the “ Anschluss ” in March of that year. Austria was originally intended as the venue. Ultimately, however, the World Cup was held in the Berlin area. The final took place in the Berlin Olympic Stadium. The game was played in a knockout system . Germany actually competed with two teams. From the team that played the quarter-finals in Leipzig, no one was used in the semi-finals and with Eifler, Klingler and Zimmermann only three players in the final in Berlin, but three players from the Berlin squad with Braselmann, Hansen and Hübner only played the semi-finals. None of the 22 German players played all three World Cup games.
The top scorer was Günter Ortmann (Germany) with 13 goals.
