São Ludgero is a small city in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina .
history
founding
The city was colonized by Germans from the Colônia de Teresópolis, founded in 1860. They had come from the Münster region , mainly from Heek , in the 1860s ; there the holy Liudger was venerated as patron saint. From 1873 onwards these settlers migrated to São Ludgero, mainly due to the poor fertility of the soil.
The current urban area was chosen by the parish priest at the time, Father Roer , who came across this place on his travels to various parishes in the vicinity of the Colônia de Teresópolis; to him the earth there appeared to be more fertile than that of his home community. Since the land belonged to the dowry of the then Princess Isabella of Brazil , a request was sent to the imperial government asking if they could take possession of this land. After a while the affirmative answer came and the church was established at the present location.
In the beginning there was no infrastructure, there were only paths and a lot of forest had to be cleared to make room for plantations. The only distraction the settlers had was the masses, where they found the strength to go further. In the beginning their houses were nothing but straw huts.
Surname
The name can be traced back to the holy Liudger , who was a very popular saint in the Westphalian homeland of the settlers.
economy
Agriculture, ranching, and industry are the main industries in the municipality. Poultry production, dairy cow husbandry, the cultivation of tobacco (to a lesser extent today), corn, beans, fruits and vegetables are particularly noteworthy. The plastics and wood industries should also be mentioned.
