features

Saw potted fern ( Polypodium cambricum )

The saw-potted fern reaches heights of about 20 to 50 cm. The rhizome has chaff scales 5 to 11 mm long. The leaves die in spring, new leaves are formed in autumn. The leaf margin is cartilaginous and translucent. In the leaf bays it does not reach the median nerve, it is separated from it by green tissue.

The sori are elongated-elliptical. In the sori and sporangia there are branched, glandular threads reminiscent of fungal hyphae . The sporangia have four to seven thick-walled annulus cells.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 74.

Distribution and locations

The saw-potted fern is native to the Mediterranean region. It only reaches Central Europe in South Tyrol, where it occurs mainly between Salurn and Bolzano , and in southern Switzerland . It grows in crevices in the rock and wall, in South Tyrol in warm climates. It colonizes silicate and carbonate rock. It is mainly limited to the colline altitude level , it rarely rises to the montane level. It occurs in societies of the Polypodion serrati association.
