The Søndervig Army Coast Battery is a German fortress that was built during the Second World War as part of the Atlantic Wall near the Danish town of Ringkøbing . The system is divided into two parts. On the one hand, bunkers were built directly at Søndervig , and on the other, most of the facility is 4 km further north at Kryle.

history

Bunker, Søndervig beach

From 1941 the first coastal batteries in the form of four captured French howitzers of 10.5 cm caliber were brought into position in Søndervig. From a military point of view, the area around Søndervig was suitable for landing operations, as one could have penetrated further inland quickly. On the rest of the coast from Nissumfjord to Nymindegab , further advance through the fjords and swamps would have been made more difficult.

Due to these circumstances, over 50 bunkers were built in the dunes of the Kryle settlement . To ward off an invasion , four 10.5 cm cannons were placed in bunkers and a fire control bunker was built on the beach. The entire area was fortified with machine gun bunkers, mine fields and barbed wire.

The Air Force's grass snake radar station is located in the north of the facility . A Wassermann M radar tower was erected to the north and a radar command bunker was built in the center of the facility. The entire area was secured by anti-aircraft batteries and the bunkers of the Søndervig Army Coast Battery. The flak batteries repeatedly fought hostile streams of bombers on their entry and exit into the German Reich. The Allies refrained from bombing the facility, as they used the radar station as a direction finding station for navigation.
