The Südardey walls are a natural spatial unit with the order number 337 1 .51 and encompass the southern part of the Ardey Mountains with the wooded slopes of up to 40 ° steeply to the Ruhr from Dortmund - Hohensyburg over parts of the urban areas from Herdecke and Wetter (Ruhr) to the Gederbachtal on the border with Witten .

The Syberg , Auf dem Heil and Harkortberg elevations also belong to the natural area . To the north is the Ardeyhöhe (337 1 .50). The Ruhraue at the foot of the Südardey walls with the Ruhr reservoirs Hengsteysee and Harkortsee and the centers of Herdecke and Wetter (Ruhr) is not part of the Südardey walls, but already belongs to the Hagener Ruhrtal natural area (337 2 .10) in the Hagen valley basin (337 2 .1 ) in the south or to the Ardeypforte (337 1 .4) in the east of the Ardey. The sun-exposed, sickle-shaped impact slopes of the Ruhr rise 150 to 170 m high above the meanders of the river and consist of Upper Carboniferous slates with dry and poor soils. Conglomerate and sandstone banks form particularly rugged slopes with individual rocky cliffs.

The structure of the terrain prevents large-scale settlement in the natural area. As the Sigiburg shows, the strategic importance of the heights was already recognized and used in the old Saxon times. The great difference in height between the Ruhraue and the Ardeywand made it possible to build the Koepchenwerk pumped storage power plant on the slope.
