The Harkortberg is a 231.6 meter high and around 1.5 km long southern branch of the Auf dem Heil ridge in the Ardey Mountains . It is located in the Alt-Wetter district of Wetter (Ruhr) in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia .

The former simply Wetterberg survey mentioned is also the like on her standing Harkortturm after the industrial pioneer Friedrich Harkort named (1793-1880). The old name can still be found today in the street name Wetterberg : This two-part path on the western slope of the mountain leads over a kilometer into the forest, in the last section as a non-public forest road . On the mountain there is a leisure area with sports fields , a climbing forest and viewpoints, which can be accessed via the public road Harkortberg .

Natural space

In terms of natural space , the Harkortberg is counted as a unit of the Südardey walls . Its flat summit is around 350 m from the Harkort Tower in the forest; it lies near the AVU - water reservoir north of the climbing forest.

In the east and south the Ruhr flows around the mountain in an arc; in the east, the river has been dammed up to form Harkortsee since the 1930s . The east side of the Harkortberg, also known as Kleff , forms part of the Ruhr slope between Herdecke and Wetter. In the north and west, the Schnodderbachtal cuts the Harkortberg apart from other areas of the wooded ridge on the Heil . Only in the northeast, for example in the area of the municipal boundary between Wetter and Herdecke, does it flow smoothly into the ridge.

The predominantly mixed deciduous and deciduous forest areas of the mountain are almost entirely within the cross-community landscape protection area of Schede, Auf dem Heil, Rostesiepen, Kallenberg, Harkortberg, Harkortsee, Ruhrauen . The small-scale FFH area Felsen am Harkortsee is located on the steep slope of the Ruhr, in the transition area between Harkortberg and the rest of the ridge .

use

Economic use

The forest on the mountain has been used for forestry for centuries , until today mainly in the form of an age-group forest . The species composition largely corresponds to the natural forest community of the Hainsimsen-Buchenwald . The less easily accessible stands on the steep slope of the Ruhr are only partially commercial forest , the stands there are more like a permanent mixed forest . The agricultural uses formerly in the area of today's leisure area (grassland, partly also arable farming) were abandoned towards the end of the 19th century.

In addition, hard coal and Ruhr sandstone used to be mined at Harkortberg . At the northeastern foot of the mountain, on the road between Wetter and Herdecke on the Harkortsee, is the listed tunnel mouth of the United Eulalia colliery . Partly abandoned old quarries are mainly found in the south-west and south-east lower slope areas. A larger quarry is located in the Schnodderbachtal , two smaller ones are, for example, on the Ruhr slope below the memorial.

Development

Towards the south, the Harkortberg has its smallest slope. The lower slope areas are largely closed up to a height of about 200 m with residential areas of old weather. On the south-western slope of the mountain, the residential development is followed by the approximately 5.2 hectare urban cemetery Gartenstrasse . In the forest north of the leisure area on the Harkortberg there is the 2-hectare allotment garden of the KGV Ostland with around 70 built plots.

On Sunderweg, about 100 meters south of the Harkort tower, you can still see the remains - a platform in the area, foundation parts and dry stone walls - of an excursion restaurant that was abandoned in the 20th century and the above-ground parts of a now closed bunker from the Second World War . In the last years of the war, the bunker was used as a district command post for NSDAP district No. 39 Westphalia-South and as an air raid control center for the district. It was the seat of the Gauleiter and Reich Defense Commissioner Albert Hoffmann . The Gauefehlsstelle, which went into operation in June 1943, was built by the Todt Organization . Shortly before the end of the war, it was finally abandoned and evacuated on April 10, 1945.

Cenotaph on the Harkortberg

About 300 meters south of the Harkort tower, accessible via a path at the corner of Sunderweg and Ehrenmalweg, there is a memorial for those who fell in the 1914–1918 war . The monument made of Ruhr sandstone was realized with donations from the citizenry (18,500 RM ) and inaugurated on June 28, 1931. The freely accessible memorial complex includes a vantage point from which there is a good view of the Harkortsee.

The shooting range of the former Wetter 1911 rifle club is located near the memorial . The shooting club was demolished in 2011 after the club was dissolved in 2008.

Recreational use

The “Harkortberg” leisure area is located on the hilltop, with over 100 public parking spaces . The Harkortberg can only be reached by public transport using a citizen bus line. The leisure area and the adjacent forest area are used intensively for sports and local recreation . Several hiking trails lead over the mountain, u. a. the historic Ruhrhöhenweg and the local Harkort-Weg .

The leisure area is dominated by the Harkort Tower , inaugurated in 1884 , a landmark of the city of Wetter that can be seen from afar. The temporarily opened observation tower offers - as well as a 2008 newly furnished and about 150 meters north to viewing platform - a good panoramic view of the Ruhr valley.

On the Turmplatz , a Rotascheplatz directly at the Harkort Tower, there are free opportunities for sporting activities. Depending on the weather, the lawn slope to the north serves primarily as a lawn for sunbathing and picnics or as a toboggan slope .

Two other sports fields are mainly available for school and club sports. The Waldstadion is both an athletics arena and a football field . It is looked after by the football club FC Wetter 10/30 , which also runs a small restaurant there in its sports home Zum Berggeist . The neighboring sports field of the Harkort 1861 gymnastics community, on the other hand, is a simple lawn. In its clubhouse "Waldschänke", TGH Wetter also offers a small gastronomic offer at certain times.

The Kletterwald Wetter high ropes course , which opened on July 5, 2008, is a sporting and tourist attraction . It is located in the beech forest north of the Harkort tower.

There are regular and irregular events on the leisure area. In addition to the annual Easter bonfire, this includes in particular sporting events organized by the local clubs, v. a. Football tournaments and athletics competitions .

Of supraregional importance is the Harkortbergfest , a mountain gymnastics festival that took place on August 13, 1886 for the first time in the area called the old trunk at the Harkort tower. Its forerunner was the Sonnenstein Festival , which was held from 1881 to 1885 on the Sonnenstein in neighboring Herdecke . In the 20th century, the Harkortbergfest was temporarily held not on the mountain, but in other places in the city (1946–1950 on the sports grounds at Harkortsee and 1980 in the Oberwengern school center). In the summer of 2006 the 125-year-old Harkortberg Festival was held.

Marathon start at the Ruhrbike Festival 2010 on the Harkortberg

Mountain bike competitions have been held on the Harkortberg since the beginning of the 21st century ; the Ruhrbike Festival is well known . In 2007, Wetter was the venue for the German MTB Championships in the cross-country discipline . Several races of the MTB Bundesliga have already taken place on the mountain. For these events, predominantly existing forest paths on the Harkortberg and in the surrounding forests are used as race tracks. In some places, cross-country sections are also set up, e.g. B. for passages of higher difficulty levels. However, these sections always require a separate landscape and forest law permit and must then be returned to their original state. Outside of the official mountain bike races, cycling in the forest on the Harkortberg , which is under landscape protection , is only permitted on roads and fixed paths in accordance with § 3 LFoG NRW .
