The southern belt railway is a railway line in the Lombard city of Milan , which is operated by the state railway company Rete Ferroviaria Italiana . It was built in 1891 to connect the lines coming from the east and south with the Porta Sempione marshalling yard without going through the old Milano Centrale station.
After the expansion of the Milan railway junction in 1931, the western section was closed. Since then, the line has served as a connection with the Milan – Mortara line . It was mainly used for freight transport. Since 2004 it has been used by the S9 line of the Milan S-Bahn .
