As Southern Altai ( Russian Южный Алтай ) a mountain range in southern will Altai Mountains , respectively.

The mountain range runs in a west-east direction, in the western part in eastern Kazakhstan and in the eastern part along the border between the People's Republic of China and Russia . It has a length of about 125 km. It reaches a maximum height of 3871  m in the Jagyrtau (Джагыртау) . In the west it is continued in Sarymsaqty . In the east it ends at the Tawan Bogd massif . The foothills are between 1400 and 1500  m high and are covered by a steppe landscape. To heights of 2100- 2200  m are found larch forests . The subalpine vegetation zone begins above this . There are several glaciers , including the 5 km long and 19.5 km² large Adachinski Glacier . The mountain range forms the watershed between Akalacha and Buchtarma in the north and Kanas and Aqqaba in the south. The Qaraqaba river valley forms the western border.
