Southeast Asia Current - Journal of Current Southeast Asian Affairs is a scientific journal published since 1982 on political, economic and social developments in Brunei , Indonesia , Cambodia , Laos , Malaysia , Myanmar , East Timor , the Philippines , Singapore , Thailand and Vietnam .

The publisher of the Südostasien aktuell is the GIGA Institute of Asian Studies (GIGA Institute for Asian Studies - IAS) in Hamburg . The bi-monthly journal is part of the GIGA Journal Family of the GIGA German Institute of Global and Area Studies (Hamburg). The editorial team is headed by Marco Bünte and Howard Loewen .

The GIGA Journal Family is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) as an open access pilot project. In the two-year project period, several established social science journals, including the Südostasien aktuell , are to be converted into open access journals and, in addition to the print version, offered online worldwide.

Südostasien aktuell offers well-founded studies and reports on current developments in the countries of Southeast Asia, as well as information about the regional organization ASEAN and its relationship to the major powers in the region. Important events and connections are also commented on in detailed background analyzes in order to complete the overview of the region.

The scientific papers will be ahead of its release a double anonymous peer review process ( peer review subject), to ensure the quality of the contributions.

Southeast Asia aktuell is aimed at experts who deal with the countries of Southeast Asia in science and politics, in business, administration and the media. The journal belongs to the holdings of many public and university libraries etc. in Germany and abroad and is classified, for example, at the University of Bonn as one of the most important German-language periodicals on current developments in the Asian region of Southeast Asia.
