Suleyman Hilmi Tunahan
Süleyman Hilmi Tunahan (born in 1888 in the village Ferhatlar near Silistra in Bulgaria , died 16th September 1959 in Üsküdar , Turkey ) was an Islamic scholar of the 20th century and a Naqshbandi - Sheikh .
Life
Tunahan graduated from Middle School in Silistra in 1902 and then learned Arabic at the Satırlı Medrese . In 1907 he continued his religious education in Istanbul. He studied the Koran, Tafsir and Hadith at various institutions. In 1918 he received a teaching permit and a job as a Müderris with a monthly wage of 400 kurus . In 1920 he received Ottoman citizenship. Tunahan taught Turkish and Arabic at various madrasahs. After the introduction of the law on the standardization of teaching , he resigned from his position and now volunteered to teach Islamic sciences . In 1930 Tunahan left Istanbul and worked in agriculture on a farm in Çatalca that his father had left him. During this time he taught farm workers and his two daughters Bedia and Ferhan, which meant breaking a taboo.
In 1938 he accepted a position as a preacher and preached as an employee of the religious authority, mainly in the smaller mosques of Istanbul. He was arrested in 1939 and mistreated in police custody for three days. In 1943 the authorities withdrew his permission to preach. Another arrest followed in 1944, this time for eight days. He received his permission to preach back in 1950. In 1951 Tunahan opened his first private Koran boarding school in Konya . In 1957 he was denounced after a sermon in the Grand Mosque (Ulu Cami) in Bursa. It was said that he called himself a Mahdi . Tunahan was arrested and sentenced to death 59 days later. The trial ended in an acquittal.
Tunahan was buried in the Karacaahmet Cemetery in Istanbul. The only handwriting he left behind was a seven-page Elif Cüz booklet with which one can learn the Arabic script within a few hours.
