The Süntelsandstein belongs to the group of Wealden sandstones and occurs in a sandstone deposit in the Süntel ridge near Hameln in Lower Saxony . Mining sites are around Pötzen near Hessisch-Oldendorf . It is a sandstone from the Lower Cretaceous . In 2008 there were no more quarries in operation.

Rock description

The Süntelsandstein is a predominantly pebbly sandstone with shale deposits. Its color is light, yellowish and whitish gray. The Osterwald sandstone has regionally reddish to yellowish flamed textures. Mica and carbonaceous particles also occur in this sandstone . It is mainly fine-grained, locally also very fine-grained, now and then there are pebbles up to a diameter of 20 millimeters. Its pore volume is not insignificant.

Occurrence

The occurrence fluctuates with regard to the proportion of binder. Deposits of clays and coal seams in this rock deposit occur. The Süntelsandstein from Hamelspringe was particularly fine-grained and came close to the qualities of Obernkirchener sandstone . The rock layers are 200 to 300 meters thick. The layer sequences are around 5 meters high, but their quality varies greatly.

Mineral inventory

According to Grimm, this sandstone, like Deistersandstein and Nesselbergsandstein, fluctuates from 78 to 82 percent quartz , 18 to 20 percent rock fragments, heavy metals up to 2 percent and the accessories below 1 percent. The heavy metals and accessories are: zircon , rutile , apatite , tourmaline , muscovite , leucoxene and opaque grains. The grain size is between 0.06 and 0.4 mm.

use

The Süntelsandstein was used as brick, steps, curbs and curbs and paving stones. Underwater building stones were extracted from certain layers and mill and grindstones were made. Sand was also used to make glass bottles. The ashlars were mainly used in north-west Germany, in the Hanover and Hameln area. In the area around Hameln, this sandstone was used for many well-known buildings in the area, such as B. at the Pied Piper House , Wedding House and the Leist House, also Barntrup Castle, Schwöbber Castle and Hämelschenburg Castle .

Development of the quarries

The high point of use was in the Wilhelminian era and as early as 1914 there was a decline in demand for companies with 300 stone masons and stone masons . In 1938 only two companies were involved in the extraction and processing of Süntelsandstein. After 1945 a small business with 12 employees was reopened, today no more Süntelsandstein is quarried. The stone is only used for road construction in quarries near Pötzen , Segelhorst , Langenfeld and Hamelspringe .
