history

church

According to an old legend, the church was founded in 896 from Möllenbeck. This year is associated with the legend of the noble free Countess Hildburg and her seven own churches (parishes). The foundation of the Benedictine monastery Möllenbeck in 896 is documented.

The earliest documented mention, however, dates back to 1230. The church was originally built in the Romanesque style . The clearest proof of this is the round arch, which is half covered by the gallery , between the base of the tower and the nave with its Romanesque transom profiles. In addition, during the renovation in 1989, the remains of a flat Romanesque beam ceiling were found.

The time when the Gothic vaults were built is unknown. The vaults above the nave were destroyed by fire in the early 15th century and renewed before 1443. The vault above the altar was preserved at that time. The keystone there shows the Schaumburger nettle leaf . The keystone in the central vault shows a representation of the Sacred Heart "(heart with cross, 5 drops of blood, only the stigmata). An anchor above the gallery . Faith (cross), love (heart), hope (anchor) are symbolized here.

Instead of the originally Gothic windows on the north side, the current ones have been installed over the centuries. In 1969 the red sandstone slabs from Sollinger were replaced by tiles on the roof. The church tower is 26 m high.

When the church was painted in 1989, old paints from the 17th century were exposed, as were the remains of a tendril painting on the vaults . Most of these were brought to the fore and restored.
