Churches

St. Matthaei

The place Großenwieden is of art historical importance because of its Gothic St. Matthaei Church. A first mention comes from the year 1031, when the church was transferred to the Abdingshof monastery . The current church was built from rubble stones in the late 13th century . Originally it probably only consisted of the two western vaults of today's church; The tower and choir were built later. The attached sacristy dates from 1481. A major building measure took place in 1927 when the two northern vaulted bays were built. The frescoes in the chancel were also exposed.

Oldest work of art is the tabernacle of Arnold Eckersten of 1300 in the sanctuary; the Reformation, with its changed understanding of the Lord's Supper, turned it into a window. A wooden closet on the east wall is from the Gothic period. In 1488 the choir was decorated with frescoes with numerous scenes from the Old and New Testament (20 in an upper and 18 in a lower row). Representations of witches and devils are sometimes very drastic.

A bronze bell from 1519 hangs in the church tower. The sacrament implements were donated in 1664 and a chandelier in 1680. The pulpit , crucifix on the altar and baptismal font date from the 17th century. The window painting above the altar from 1927 shows the risen One .

The parish of St. Matthaei belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran Church District Grafschaft Schaumburg .

St. Hedwig

On June 22, 1974, the Catholic St. Hedwig Church was inaugurated by Bishop Heinrich Maria Janssen , designed as a prefabricated church. Before that, the Catholic services took place in the Protestant church or in an inn. Since 2012 the church at the end of the street Mühlenbreite has belonged to the parish of St. Sturmius in Rinteln, before it belonged to St. Bonifatius in neighboring Hessisch Oldendorf .

ferry

The Weser ferry Großenwieden connects the Hessisch Oldendorfer districts of Großenwieden and Rumbeck . Since 1922 there has been a ferry connection with a high-wire ferry . Today's 24 m long and 5 m wide model was built in 1960 by the Bayerische Schiffbaugesellschaft in Erlenbach am Main . In 1979/80 the ferry station was relocated 50 m upstream.
