Sŏn U-hui (born January 3, 1922 in Chŏngju , P'yŏngan-pukto ; † June 12, 1986 in Pusan ) was a South Korean writer .

Life

Sŏn U-hui was born on January 3, 1922 in Chŏngju, North P'yŏngan Province . He worked as a journalist for the Chosun Ilbo (조선 일보) before he was drafted into the army in 1949 as an educator and public relations officer. He made his debut in 1955 when his story Ghosts (귀신) was published. From 1959 until his retirement in 1986 he continued his career as a journalist. He died in Pusan ​​on June 12, 1986.

Humanistic action or the formulation of an active will in serious situations characterizes Sŏn's literary world. His work Feuerblume (불꽃) is about a man who overcomes his unrealistic attitude and absorbs the spirit of resistance. The will to act is rooted in respect for humanity and the desire to oppose dehumanization . Sŏn is of the opinion that it is the duty of intellectuals to be socially active and to counteract a dehumanization that is caused by ideological conflicts and social grievances. In other works, however, the humanistic approach is overemphasized, which gives the works the character of a fantasy world. From 1965 he showed a more conservative attitude.
