The locomotive of the SŽD series ТЭ4 (German transcription TE 4) of the Soviet Railways (SŽD) was a test locomotive in broad gauge design , which arose from the diesel locomotive of the series ТЭ2 and had a drive with a gas generator unit . In contrast to the basic variant, the locomotive was built with a middle section in which the gas generator unit was housed. Only one vehicle was built. This showed some defects in everyday use, so that it was taken back to the original variant by 1960.
construction
The locomotive with the designation ТЭ4 differed from that of its predecessor Т2 only in the middle section with the gas generator unit. She used a slightly modified version of the D50 diesel engine, the D55. With the new engine, fuel could be used with generated gas.
business
The locomotive was originally tested on the Yuzhnaya zhelesnaja doroga on the Kharkiv - Osnova section . In 1953 it was tested on the track ring of the All-Russian Research Institute for Rail Transport in Shcherbinka . After the inspection, the locomotive was put into trial operation at the Verkhny Baskuntschak depot of the Privolschskaja seleznaja doroga . For some time the locomotive was used in the Balajar depot of the railway company in Azerbaydzhan and then returned to the Verkhny Baskuntschak depot.
The reasons for the failure of the gas generator drive are mentioned in the SŽD series ТЭ1Г . The main cause was the high level of wear on the engine assembly. Therefore, the locomotive was taken back to the original version in 1960, the middle section was decommissioned and the diesel engine was replaced by the standard version D50 .
The locomotive was given the company number ТЭ2.001 and an addition to distinguish it from the original variant, so that its overall designation was ТЭ2.20.001 .
